Discovery Starts Here
Give biochemist William Tong a few molecules of anything and he can tell you what it is.
Professor Tong and his research team have developed and patented nonlinear laser technologies sensitive enough to identify chemicals in the smallest concentrations. Their research has many significant applications.
In the world of counterterrorism, it enables handheld detectors to locate improvised explosive devices on the battlefield. Within the medical field, his research assists in earlier discovery of AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease.
Professor Tong exemplifies both the excellence of San Diego State’s faculty and the breadth of our university’s research program.
Since 2000, SDSU faculty and staff have been awarded more than $1.5 billion in external funding. In addition, SDSU’s reputation for bold approaches to difficult problems has led to collaborations with MIT and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Innovation and discovery
The Campaign for SDSU is raising funds to fuel innovation and discovery within our seven colleges. Donor support will help us purchase new research equipment and give additional students the experience of participating in basic research under the mentorship of SDSU’s outstanding faculty.
Without financial constraints, the only limits we face are those imposed by our own creativity and imagination.
